Rapid investigation pinpointed source of sewage flood

When Angi and Simon Hughes discovered a sewage flood at their home it could not have happened at a worse time.

A week before Christmas, it was not a good time to find that many gallons of sewage was seeping under the floors of your semi-detached home.

Their insurance company put in place a series of measures to tackle the problem at the property in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

One of them was to call in drainage specialists UKDN Waterflow (LG) to investigate where the sewage had coming from.

Angi Hughes was very pleased to see them arrive. She says: “The sewage had been pumped out, but we didn’t know where it had come from.

“The UKDN Waterflow (LG) team arrived promptly and were very efficient. They clearly knew want they were doing. I was confident they would find what had gone wrong.”

A CCTV drainage survey camera was put down the sewer pipe leading from the Hughes’ home.

The HD quality video it captured revealed a displacement in the sewer pipe under their neighbour’s land.

The UKDN Waterflow (LG) team then carried out dye testing that revealed the displaced pipe was linked to the sewage flood on the Hughes’ property.

It also pointed to Yorkshire Water being responsible for repairing the pipe.

Thanks to the drainage survey and diagnostics work completed by UKDN Waterflow (LG), Yorkshire Water agreed, and lined the pipe where the joint had become displaced.

The Hughes are still in the process of recovering from the sewage flood. They will need a new kitchen and other remedial work to their home.

However, they were pleased and impressed with UKDN Waterflow (LG)’s contribution to the initial crisis.

Angi says: “They only played a small part, but it was very important. They had the technical expertise that meant the pipe could be repaired as quickly as possible.”
